State Closes Moose Hunt RM840 in Unit 22(D) Remainder
(Nome) – The Alaska Department of Fish and Game announces an emergency order to close the State resident moose hunt by registration permit RM840 in the Unit 22D Remainder hunt area.
The State resident hunting season for bull moose by registration permit RM840 in Unit 22(D) Remainder will close by emergency order at 11:59 p.m. on August 29, 2024. The fall harvest quota of 17 bull moose is expected to be reached by the season closing date announced in this emergency order and no further harvest is warranted.
The Alaska Board of Game established a registration permit moose hunt in Unit 22(D) Remainder during the 2020 Western and Arctic Board of Game meeting in Nome. The management objective for the area is to maintain the post hunt fall composition at or above 30 bulls:100 cows. Fall moose composition surveys completed in fall 2022 resulted in 23 bulls:100 cows. This survey result compared with previous results in the area suggest that the bull cow ratio has continued to persist below our management objective since 2013. With the adoption of a registration permit hunt in the area the department established a quota for the 22D Remainder hunt area of 17 bulls for the 2024-2025 regulatory year to prevent excessive bull harvest and allow for the bull:cow ratio to increase.
The season closure does not affect the remaining registration permit hunt RM840 hunt areas: Unit 22C, Unit 22(B) West of the Darby Mountains, Unit 22(D) Kuzitrin Drainage, and Unit 22(D) Southwest. Unless additional closures are announced by emergency order, the RM840 season in these hunt areas is from Sept. 1 through Sept. 14.
All other moose hunting regulations in Unit 22 remain unchanged by this emergency order.
