Neets Bay Mountain Goat Hunt Zone Closed
(Ketchikan) – Emergency order R1-5-24 was issued to close the mountain goat season in the Neets Bay hunt zone of RG001 and RG002 on Sunday, August 11, 2024 at 11:59 PM.
Hunt managers set a harvest quota of three males or one female for the Neets Bay hunt zone of mountain goat hunts RG001 and RG002 in Game Management Unit 1A. Quotas are based on the most recent aerial surveys. These surveys are used to estimate the goat population and provide quotas for allowable harvest before a hunt zone is closed. The strategy of closing hunt zones when the female harvest quota is reached has been effective in reducing female harvest and has helped maintain high harvest opportunities for male goats. Keeping hunters focused on avoiding female harvest maintains opportunities for more hunters to participate, especially in hunt zones that have good access. To date, one male and one female goat have been harvested in the Neets Bay hunt zone. Therefore, this zone is being closed by emergency order at 11:59 PM, Sunday, August 11, 2024.
Those portions of Unit 1A not affected by this emergency order will remain open until harvest quotas are reached or the season concludes.
