State Shuts Down Baranof Island’s Necker Bay Mountain Goat Hunt

Necker Bay Mt. Goat Hunt Zone Closed

(Sitka) – Hunt managers set a harvest quota of two males or one female for the Necker Bay hunt zone of mountain goat hunt RG150 on Baranof Island. Quotas are based on the most recent aerial surveys.

The strategy of closing hunt zones when one female has been harvested has been very effective in reducing female harvest and has helped maintain high harvest opportunities for male goats. Keeping hunters focused on avoiding female harvest maintains opportunities for more hunters to participate, especially in hunt zones that have good access.

To date, two male goats from Necker Bay have been harvested. Therefore, this zone is being closed by emergency order (EO) at 11:59 PM, Friday, September 4, 2026.

Emergency Order (EO) R1-4-26 was issued to close the mt. goat season in the Necker Bay zone on Friday, September 4, 2026 @11:59 pm.

The Necker Bay zone could be over-utilized due to low population levels and accessibility. Managers will reassess and make in-season adjustments to quotas and zone closures when updated surveys are conducted.

Those portions of Unit 4 not affected by this emergency order will remain open until harvest quotas are reached or the season concludes.
