Wanted: Kenai Peninsula Bull Moose Samples

(Soldotna, Alaska) – The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) is requesting help from the public on a new moose research project on the Kenai Peninsula (Units 7 and 15).

Research biologists in Soldotna are asking for specific samples from hunter-harvested bull moose across the Kenai Peninsula this fall. The samples requested are:

• Both testicles and scrotum

• Feces (if present)

• Portion of the liver

• Section of lower jaw with front teeth

Results from the samples will be used to investigate variation in essential minerals associated with health and physiology in moose. For optimal results in the analysis, samples need to be transferred to ADF&G within 24 HOURS of harvest.

Participation is voluntary. Sample kits will be available in Soldotna, Homer and Anchorage. To request a sample kit and detailed instructions, contact ADF&G research biologist Marjorie Cox for more information: Marjorie.cox@alaska.gov, or 907-260-2953.
