Scheduled Prescribed Burn At Lake Clark National Park

PORT ALSWORTH, Alaska — Lake Clark National Park and Preserve plans to conduct prescribed burning of slash piles, forest debris, in Port Alsworth beginning March 9. Burning is expected to continue through March 16 and may extend to March 19, depending on weather and site conditions.

Many of the piles are located near roads and trails in the park headquarters area.  Visitors are advised to use caution when traveling in the area. Light to moderate smoke may be visible in and around Port Alsworth during active burning. Please do not report smoke unless it is creating a visibility hazard.

Pile burning is a routine part of the park’s fuel reduction and vegetation management program. Removing excess vegetation and hazardous fuels reduces wildfire risk and helps protect nearby homes and infrastructure. Prescribed fire also supports forest health by returning nutrients to the soil and maintaining resilient ecosystems.
