Peterson Creek and Lagoon Closed to Coho Salmon Fishing

(Juneau) – The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) is announcing that beginning 12:01 a.m. Thursday, September 8, fishing for coho salmon will be closed in Peterson Creek and Lagoon. Coho salmon may not be targeted, retained, or possessed. This closure will be in effect from September 8 through December 31, 2022. In addition, only unbaited, artificial lures may be used in Peterson Creek and Lagoon.

Coho salmon returning to Peterson Creek have failed to meet the sustainable escapement goal range in 4 of the last 6 years when data was available (2016-2017 and 2020-2021, 2018 met goal, no data available for 2019). Inseason fisheries performance data indicate a below average return of coho salmon to the Juneau area. Conservative action is warranted to protect the sustainability of coho salmon in Peterson Creek. ADF&G will continue to conduct coho salmon surveys on Peterson Creek and this action may be reconsidered if the coho salmon run improves.
