Pebble CEO Might Collect $12.5 Million Bonus

Pebble Partnership CEO Tom Collier was ecstatic last week when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Pebble Mine Environmental Impact Statement recommend a plan for a gold and copper mine. Here’s what Collier had to say:

“From the beginning, we dedicated the time, resources and technical work to ensure we had a project that could be done responsibly, be done without harm to the Bristol Bay fishery, and provide meaningful contributions to the communities closest to the project. After an extensive, rigorous, and transparent review process the USACE has concluded the Pebble Project meets that mark. This is the same federal review process that has brought Alaskans decades of North Slope development and a host of other resource development projects that were resisted every step of the way by opponents of responsibly developing Alaska’s resources that now provide jobs and economic activity for thousands of Alaskans.”

While there are still obstacles standing firmly in the way of the mine actually becoming a reality, reports are surfacing that Collier could be in line for a hefty bonus (listen to the embedded tweet above), as the Natural Resources Defense Council reports:

And Collier appears also to have been right about something else:

With Donald J. Trump in the White House for perhaps just one term, Collier has a provision in his own employment contract that entitles him to a $12.5 million personal bonus if he could persuade the Army Corps to permit Pebble on an accelerated schedule.

With tensions already high in Bristol Bay as many locals and interested outsiders have fought to block the Pebble Mine, this will only fuel tempers more. Here’s Defend Bristol Bay:

Dear Supporter,Last Friday, when the Final Pebble EIS dropped, Pebble CEO Tom Collier wondered whether the opposition will soften. Well, we’re here to remind all our supporters and most importantly Tom Collier that the opposition is not going anywhere. In fact, we’re doubling down in the most urgent of times. Today we’re launching a new effort to make sure that Alaskans truly understand who will benefit from this mine: Tom Collier.

Check out CollierCashGrab.comThat’s right – according to the company’s own filings with the SEC and Collier’s testimony before Congress, Collier will receive a $12.5 million ‘extraordinary bonus” if the Army Corps signs off on its Record of Decision for the Pebble Mine this summer or fall. This project should be dead, but it isn’t. But we’re not backing down.

Help us stop Pebble Mine, defend Bristol Bay, and prevent Tom Collier from getting that big bonus. As you know, Pebble is spending big to get their permit in record time. They’re the largest lobby spender in DC for mining projects. We need your help going up against big outside money!
