Mat-Su Fishery Has Invasive Northern Pike Population Of Unknown Quantity

As Alaska attempts to eradicate invasive northern pike from its regions, a Mat-Su Valley fishery will continue monitor its status after it was reveled that at least some pike are in the water of some number. Here are some details from Alaska’s News Source:

The invasive Northern Pike, was first discovered last spring when Alaska Fish and Game Fisheries Biologist Parker Bradley was testing boats in Finger Lake and noticed a Northern Pike had made its way into the body of water.

“We were aware of it since last May and we haven’t really done much about it until this Winter,” Bradley explained.

When the fish was discovered, it was during the spawning period which made it too late to deal with it effectively, according to Bradley. So he and his team of biologists waited and did a follow-up assessment of the lake to see how many Northern Pike were present in Finger Lake.

“So far with our netting that we’ve done this winter, we haven’t seen any juveniles yet,” he said.
