Application Period for Winter Fortymile Caribou Targeted Hunt AC999 Opens October 1

(Tok, Alaska) – The Alaska Department of Fish and Game will be accepting hunter applications for a chance to participate in a winter targeted hunt (AC999) for Fortymile caribou. This targeted hunt is a provision of the Fortymile Caribou Herd Harvest Plan (harvest plan) that is intended to provide harvest opportunity to Alaska resident hunters if large numbers of caribou are close to highways and use of the normal Fortymile caribou registration hunt (RC867) presents a risk of overharvest. The AC999 hunt may be used if necessary to help meet the winter harvest quota in one or more of the road accessible zones (1, 3 and 4). The total harvest quota for the 2024–2025 winter hunt is 235 bulls, split between zones 1, 3, and 4.

Applications are accepted online only, from October 1 – October 31, 2024. Hunters can apply for this hunt at https://www.adfg.alaska.gov/index.cfm?adfg=huntlicense.targeted.

If the AC999 hunt occurs, a limited number of hunters will be randomly selected from the AC999 applicants to receive a permit to harvest a portion of the winter hunt quota, during a specified portion of the 2024–2025 winter hunt. Hunters chosen to participate will be contacted prior to the hunt opening with details about season dates, bag limit and how to obtain their permit. Hunters that harvested a caribou anywhere in Alaska after July 1st, 2024, are not eligible for this hunt.
