ADFG Petitions Board Of Game Over Halt Of Predator Control Measures

The state continues to protest a judicial ruling over Alaska’s controversial predator control program aimed to eliminate bears and wolves with the intention of protecting caribou herds.

Here’s more from an ADFG petition with the Alaska Board of Game:

ADF&G Petitions the Alaska Board of Game for Emergency Regulations to Continue Predator Control to Benefit Mulchatna Caribou in Southwest Alaska

(Anchorage) – The Division of Wildlife Conservation petitioned the Alaska Board of Game (board) today to create emergency regulations that will allow the department to conduct intensive management (IM) to benefit the Mulchatna caribou herd (MCH).

The board is meeting at the Egan Center in Anchorage March 21–28, 2025. Comments on the emergency petition will be accepted in person and in writing during the meeting. The deadline to sign up to provide oral testimony is 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 22. Written comments can be submitted to the board online at https://boardofgame.adfg.alaska.gov/, and will be accepted throughout the duration of the meeting.

The department is specifically asking for regulations to reinstate both same day airborne permittee wolf removal, and department-led bear and wolf removal efforts. Department-led efforts have resulted in positive growth in herd abundance and improved calf-to-cow ratios while not impacting the sustainability of regional wolf or bear populations. It is critical for the continued recovery of the herd to continue predator control efforts.

The petition for emergency regulations can be found here. The board intends to discuss the petition at the end of the meeting to allow the public to provide comments.
