ADFG Closes Zones 1 And 4 Fortymile Caribou Hunt After Quota Filled

An Alaska Department of Fish and Game Facebook post announced that the Fortymile Caribou Herd registration hunt RC860 closed in Zones 1 and 4 (see map below) as of today. Here are the details:

The Fortymile Caribou registration hunt RC860 closed in Zones 1 and 4, at 11:59PM on August 13, 2023. The quota in these zones has been met and these zones will not reopen.

DO NOT FORGET TO REPORT YOUR HUNT, even if you did not harvest an animal. Successful hunters are required to report within 3 days!

The state hunting season is scheduled to remain open in Zones 2 and 3.

Caribou are currently widely distributed in Zones 1, 2 and 4.

Both the Resident and Nonresident State Season will be from August 10th through September 30th or until quotas are met.

The overall fall quota for the Fortymile hunt RC860 is 750 bulls. Zone quotas for the road accessible zones are 360 bulls for Zones 1 & 4 combined near the Steese Highway and Chena Hot Springs Road and 240 bulls for Zone 3 near the Taylor Highway. The Zone 2 quota is 150 bulls.

Hunters should continue to check the hotline for updates as zones may be closed on short notice if quotas are met.

Registration permits for RC860 are available online at hunt.alaska.gov and at Fish and Game offices in Fairbanks, Delta Junction, Tok, Anchorage, Douglas and Palmer and at vendors in Eagle, Central and Tok.

We encourage hunters to obtain their RC860 permits online at hunt.alaska.gov. Hunters who did not report in a timely manner on this or another hunt last year and

were placed on the failure to report list are not eligible for registration permits during this regulatory year.
