ADFG Closes Paamiut Island Muskox Hunt

Special Permit Hunt RX055 for Stranded Muskoxen Closed

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game announces that special permit hunt RX055 for muskoxen in Game Management Unit 18 on Paamiut Island (southeast of Nunivak Island) is now closed.

All stranded muskoxen on the island have been successfully harvested under the emergency order issued pursuant to 5 AAC 92.046. The Department opened the limited resident permit hunt on July 22, 2026, after determining the animals faced little chance of survival due to the absence of fresh water and limited forage.

No additional permits will be issued. The Department thanks participating hunters for their assistance in addressing this situation.
