State Extending Unit 9B Resident Moose Hunt Through Wednesday

Season extended in Unit 9B for Resident Moose Hunt RM272

(King Salmon) –The RM272 resident-only moose hunting season in Unit 9B is extended from September 25 to September 30, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. by emergency order. Unusual seasonal conditions have made boat travel to hunting areas unsafe or difficult. Many hunters rely heavily on boat access. High water and repeated periods of poor travel conditions reduced the number of days hunters could access hunting areas. Additionally, heavy rain in early September rendered many creeks impassable and made travel along the north shore of Iliamna Lake challenging. Reported harvest is lower than in recent years.

The 2025 Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) composition survey indicates stable moose density in Unit 9B. The Unit 9B bull-cow ratio has fluctuated slightly since 2020 but, as of 2025, remains above management objectives at 69.5 bulls:100 cows. Management objectives for low density areas (<0.5 moose/mi2), which includes Unit 9B, is 25 bulls:100 cows. This indicates a harvestable surplus of bulls.

Registration permits are available online at http://hunt.alaska.gov or in person in Unit 9B villages or in King Salmon. Permit holders must return their hunt reports to the King Salmon ADF&G office by phone (907) 246-3340, in person, or online at http://hunt.alaska.gov within 10 days of killing a moose. Meat taken prior to October 1 in Unit 9B must remain on the bones of the front quarters and hindquarters until removed from the field or processed for consumption.

As a reminder, the bag limit is one bull moose, and successful hunters cannot harvest a moose in the RM272 December 15–January 15 winter season. This emergency order does not affect any other moose hunting regulations in Unit 9.
