FLOWER & PORCUPINE MOUNTAIN AREA CLOSED TO GOAT HUNTING

(Juneau) – An emergency order (01-15-24) has been issued to close the mountain goat hunting season in the area bounded by the Klehini River on the north, the Tsirku River south, the Canadian border west, and the Chilkat River on the east side at 11:59 P.M., on Tuesday, October 8, 2024.

Based on a survey counts a guideline harvest objective of 2-3 points (male goats=1 point, female goats=2 points) was established by ADF&G for the area described above. As of Monday October 7, 2024, three male goats have been harvested for a total of 3 points. Because the guideline harvest level has been met and due to the vulnerability of goats in this area to overharvest, this emergency order is being issued.

Those portions of Unit 1D not affected by this emergency order, and not previously closed by emergency order, will remain open until the harvest guidelines are reached or the seasons come to their scheduled conclusions. Biologists encourage hunters to target male goats to allow for higher sustainable harvest in the future.
