State Kills Three Brown Bears In Anchorage After Flurry Of Destructive Activity In Local Neighborhoods
Bear incidents have been in the news in recent weeks, with this week a woman injured in an attack while hiking in Haines. In an Anchorage neighborhood, three bears were killed by Alaska Department of Fish and Game officials after a series of destructive incidents.
Here are details from the Anchorage Daily News:
This week’s search follows reports of damage to homes and vehicles by bears that wildlife officials believe became accustomed to eating unsecured garbage and leftover food.
It also comes just daysafter the killing of a sow brown bear and one of her cubs on Sept. 17 near Grey Wolf Circle, officials said. The area is in the North Fork Little Campbell Creek corridor.
The sow and her three cubs regularly accessed “unsecured garbage and had been sighted repeatedly in the same area,” Wardlow said. Along with the two bears killed, another one of the sow’s cubs was captured and temporarily taken to the Alaska Zoo while the third cub’s whereabouts are unknown, she said.
