Another Alaska Bear Attack: This One Along Copper River

Just a week or so after a fatal brown bear attack on a hiker near Eagle River, another mauling happened along the Copper River when two rafters unfortunately surprised a brown bear sow and her cub, which is when many bears are on high alert to protect their cubs.

Here’s more from the Anchorage Daily News:

Two people were on a raft trip from McCarthy to Cordova when they stopped at Taral Creek, which feeds into the Copper River about four miles south of Chitina, said troopers spokesman Tim DeSpain.

“They stopped at Taral Creek to make camp for the night and they encountered a sow grizzly with at least one cub,” he said.

The report also states that the sow bit one of the rafters “multiple times,” though after being flown to Anchorage the injuries are believed to be non-threatening.
